Deqi is commonly translated as “needle sensation,” sometimes as “arrival of qi”
or “needling response.”
Another important feature of deqi is that it often spreads or radiates from the
point of its elicitation, which is called “propagated sensation along meridians”
(PSM), which is explained as the flow of qi.
Sometimes, it may manifest like skin redness, gooseflesh, or localized red or white
lines along the meridians....
Scientifically DEQI is explained thus - Acupuncture through stimulating certain
acupoints may contract intraspindle muscle and then produce *myoelectricity*. ..Secondary
impulse reaching to central brain produces the patients’ needling sensation, and
the contraction of local muscle fibers through needle body to needle handle causes
the deqi sensation of acupuncturists’ hands.
This is not DEQI ......
'The Esoteric Concept'
DEQI also means the meeting of physical and spiritual energies ...a balance or harmony
When the correct set of points are given, a peculiar sensation develops after 3-5
minutes. This sensation is not local but general .....
Important : do not manipulate an acupuncture needle immediately
after insertion ... manipulate after 60 secs when the instinctive local reaction
has settled down
DEQI is a spiritual feeling ... a state of heightened awareness which develops when
the elements are balancing internally
DEQI is a feeling of healing, an antidoting of emotional turbulence and conflicts
and a feeling of relaxation and release of symptoms
In this state the persons thought process becomes positive
DEQI can be felt by patients who are quiet and meditative ; they must be instructed
to do so !
